About the Duckhead Duck Call

Jimmy Cerreta is a Vietnam-era US Army Veteran, avid outdoorsman and hunter. He is the founding chairman of the Phoenix Ducks Unlimited National Decoy Contest and has served as a judge (but not on his own entries, of course!) for the past two decades.

In the 1970s Jimmy began carving duck decoys for his own use and enjoyment. His hunting friends admired his work and asked Jimmy to carve decoys for them to use in the field as well as to enjoy as works of art. To this day, all of Jimmy’s decoys are carved as genuine hunting decoys, complete with lead weights ready to attract waterfowl in the marsh.

Before long Jimmy began showing his works of art at regional and national competitions, where he was rewarded with numerous blue ribbons and other honors. Jimmy recognized there was a wider audience for his carvings in those who appreciate the outstanding natural beauty of wildlife carvings in the dual tradition of functional hunting equipment and American Folk Art.

In the 1980s Jimmy then began carving duck calls in the form of duck heads. His works were originated with the fundamental goal to produce the most lifelike call to be used in the field. Jimmy and his hunting buddies have personally field tested his series of calls thousands of times to ensure that Jimmy’s calls exactly reproduce the sounds that attract waterfowl. Other hunters and their families have since cherished the artistry and beauty of these functional calls.

The Duckhead Duck Call has been featured at numerous Ducks Unlimited banquets across the country as well as in Ducks Unlimited magazine and other national and international outdoor publications. His work even graces the cover of Custom Call Makers of America, which is considered to be the master guide of call makers.

Jimmy is well known throughout the country for his Duckhead Duck Calls, and his work has been the subject of several television features and newspaper articles. Much to our excitement, a television crew recently trailed Jimmy as he demonstrated the in-the-field value of his duck calls as recorded from behind his duck blinds.

On this journey, both his duck decoys and duck calls proved successful: Ducks filled the sky and water, and the air resounded with responses from Jimmy’s duck calls. It was a wonderful showcase of Jimmy’s works that was aired for the entire country to witness.
